Ian Rankin is a world renowned award winning crime author. He found fame for his novels centring around Scottish police officer John Rebus. We were approached by Orion Publishing to update Rankin's digital brand including a newly designed website with highly bespoke features that Orion could update internally on a custom CMS. The purpose of building this digital brand was to appeal to existing Rankin fans as well as to ease new comers into a series which may have previously seemed intimidating.
We worked within the brand guidelines provided by Orion Publishing to update and modernise Rankin's brand so that it fit with the style of his novels and felt familiar while also bringing it forward with some modern touches and technology. In order to make it relatable to his extensive fanbase we build a style guide with fonts, colour ways and imagery that lent from the books. One key feature was the inclusion of pages for each book filterable by series, character and chronology allowing readers to keep track of a books place in the series and delve deeper to gain info on their favourite characters and storylines. We built a custom map feature for 'Rebus' Edinburgh' allowing users to navigate key spots from the books in real time.
The new books section on the Rankin site allowed users to filter through the back catalogue of books ordered chronologically and filtered by format, character or storyline.
The individual book pages linked out to purchase and aggregated all of the relevant posts, characters and links to the same page using tags used by Orion on the back end. This means the pages are updated when new content is produced.
Rebus' Edinburgh was an update from an existing mobile app which highlighted key areas from the plots of the Rebus series of books so that fans could visit Edinburgh themselves and get a feel for the setting of the novels and the action that unfolds within.
